Enchanted Encounters by James Niven
17–28 May, 2017
Opening Reception and meet the Artist: Saturday 20th May, 3pm – 5pm

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand & having lived in Melbourne Australia, Suva Fiji & Los Angeles USA, Sydney film photographer, James Niven, has his first solo exhibition in Canada at Gallery 50 Toronto for the CONTACT Photography Festival 2017 from the 17th to 28th May.

James Nivens’ latest series titled “Enchanted Encounters” first exhibited in 2015 at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia and has since reached audiences at the Head On Photo festival in Sydney Australia, Auckland Festival of Photography in New Zealand, Urban dotart in Krakow Poland and Trieste Photo Days, Trieste Italy.

James has continually photographed with his trusted film cameras ever since he took off on his first road trip through the outback of Australia as a teenager in 1986 and has now visited over 45 countries observing and capturing every day scenes with his astute eye and unique style.

“Enchanted Encounters” is a culmination of these journeys. These well composed Black & White and colour analogue photos explore his fascination with people in their everyday surroundings and the interaction the subjects have with their environment and negative space. The human presence in each photograph reflecting an intriguing insight into a moment captured in time.

“Photography for me, personally, is about being present and in the moment, giving me a clearer perspective of the world around me. It awakens my senses, provides me artistic self-expression, but most importantly enjoyment!”
