PictureWords is an on-going photo project I began in 2014. It is an visual exploration of the Chinese writing system, which dated back more than 3,500 years ago. Fundamentally, Chinese characters were created using a combination of phonetic, ideographic and logographic elements. Over thousands of years these characters have evolved into more sophisticated and complex forms, while their primeval forms recede in time.

My returning passion to Chinese poetry is the main inspiration in PictureWords. In this series, I created three work based on verses taken from three Chinese poets: Li Bai 李白 (701-762 AD); Du Mu 杜牧 (803-852 AD) and Xin Qiji 辛棄疾 (1140-1207 AD).

Quiet Night Thoughts: the first verse
“床前明月光 Abed, I see a silver light”
(Li Bai)
A work with 5 photographs
17x22 inch each, archival pigment print, in edition of 5

Autumn Night: the last verse
"臥看牽牛織女星 She lies watching heart-broken stars shed tears in the skies"
(Du Mu)
A work with 7 photographs
17x22 inch each, archival pigment print, in edition of 5

Lyrics to the Melody of Green Jade Bowl (The Lantern Festival Night): the first verse
"東風夜放花千樹 At night the east wind blew open a thousand flowering trees" (Xin Qiji)

A work with 7 photographs
17x22 inch each, archival pigment print, in edition of 5
